Explanation

This is the central verse of the chapter. Aqkaamai means 'not diminishing'. Valluvar asks what must be done for wealth to endure and grow, and answers: not coveting what lies in another's hand. It may seem a paradox. Do not many people think that wealth grows by seeking the property of others? But Valluvar says the opposite: not desiring is what protects.

We can think of several reasons. First, one who eyes another's property spends his energy and time on that very thing. He will not look after his own business. Second, wealth seized in that way is spent in litigation and enmity. Third, the trust and good name that honesty earns are a greater capital than wealth. One who has lost them finds both trade and relationships shrinking. The trust gained by the honest man protects his wealth over the long term.

Moreover, one who believes in his own labour has the habit of cherishing and guarding what he has. One who looks greedily at what belongs to others neglects his own. So non-coveting is not merely a moral counsel; it is wisdom for managing wealth.

Merchants, heads of households and rulers can all keep this verse in their lives. To stop envying what is in others' hands and to grow what is in one's own is the way to wealth that does not diminish.

A story

The Akshaya Patra

This is the story of the Akshaya Patra told in the Vana Parva of the Mahabharata. The Pandavas, having lost everything in the dice game, went to the forest. Many brahmins and ascetics followed them. Yudhishthira was grieved that he could not feed his guests. He did not think of raising an army to snatch back what he had lost. Just as he never desired another's possessions, he did not abandon dharma even when what was his own slipped from his hand.

His family priest Dhaumya advised, "Worship the Sun; he will meet your need." Yudhishthira performed severe penance. The Sun god appeared and gave him a copper vessel. "Four kinds of food will come from this without diminishing every day, and it will keep supplying until Draupadi has eaten. For twelve years it will stand by you." From then on, however many guests arrived, they satisfied their hunger.

Duryodhana learned of this and laid his plot. He sent the sage Durvasa with tens of thousands of disciples to the Pandavas, advising him to go after Draupadi had eaten. By then the vessel would be empty, and if they could not give food, the sage would grow angry and curse them. So Durvasa arrived and said, "We will bathe and return; have the food ready."

The Akshaya Patra shows that those who stood in dharma without coveting others' wealth received unfailing food of their own accord. It stands as a symbol of the verse: the way to keep wealth from diminishing is not to desire what lies in another's hand.
