Explanation

In this verse Valluvar shows shame as a guard. Naduvanmai naanupavar are those who feel ashamed of lacking fairness. Even when they know a gain is available, they will not do things that bring blame. Padupayan is the gain that is going to come, a benefit available tomorrow. However big that benefit may be, they will not take the blameworthy route for it, because within them is the inner watchman called shame.

Shame, naanam, is a much-honoured quality in Tamil tradition. It is the shrinking that rises in the mind even as one thinks of a wrong, and the blush before one's own conscience rather than before others' eyes. It stops before the law punishes. That is why Valluvar trusts the shame that comes from within more than the punishment that comes from without. Commentators explain it as: for the one who has shame, good name is bigger than profit.

Our world has many instruments of surveillance, but the true test of character is how a person acts where they do not reach. One who is ashamed to do wrong even when no one sees will not accept any profit, however large, that comes his way by it. Institutions and families can wholly trust such a person. Developing shame in this sense is a major task of education. It is not a fear of being caught but a love of being clean, which is a far steadier support.

A story

Karna's Refusal

This is the dialogue between Krishna and Karna in the Udyoga Parva of the Mahabharata. Before the Kurukshetra war the Pandavas tried for peace. Krishna went as envoy but Duryodhana would not agree. War became certain. Then Krishna met Karna privately. Karna was the foster-son of the charioteer Adhiratha, but Krishna knew the secret that he was actually Kunti's first-born.

Krishna told Karna the secret. "You are Kunti's eldest son. So you are the eldest of the Pandavas. Join your brothers, and you will be king. Draupadi will accept you as a sixth husband. Yudhishthira will crown you. You can stand with the Pandava army." It was a mighty temptation. To Karna, who had suffered contempt as a charioteer's son, the whole kingdom of the world and a family were on offer.

Karna was silent for a while, then spoke calmly. "Krishna, what you say may be true. I know my mother left me in the river. But those who raised me were Adhiratha and Radha. The one who honoured me as a king was Duryodhana. If I forget his kindness and leave him just when his defeat is certain, my whole life will be stained with blame. I have lived all these years for him."

"Kingdom, wealth, family, all may come to me. But to get them by betraying Duryodhana's trust would bring me shame. I do not want that gain," he said. Krishna marvelled at his firmness.

Later Kunti herself met Karna and begged him. Karna gave her one promise: he would not kill any of her four sons except Arjuna. He changed nothing more. For the sake of his debt of gratitude and his shame at lacking fairness, he refused a very great gain.

Though Karna's refusal led to his downfall, his fame lives on. He is a living witness that one who feels shame will not seek blame for the sake of gain.

To reflect on

When did I last turn down a gain because it would have made me ashamed?
