Explanation

Sitrinbam is petty, passing pleasure: the pleasure that comes from another's property, or from the senses. Matrinbam is 'the other pleasure', the great and lasting one. Commentators explain it variously as liberation, the joy of mental peace, or the joy given by fame and dharma. Whichever way, the thought is clear: one who seeks the higher joy will not abandon dharma for a lower one. This fits our tradition's order of aims: aram, porul, inbam and veedu.

Valluvar does not deny pleasure. He points out that there is a ranking among pleasures. The petty pleasure comes at once but does not last, and behind it come regret, fear and loss. The great joy comes late but lasts. One who knows this difference waits patiently. Modern studies in which children who wait for a larger reward later do well reflect the same point.

We can use this in daily life. Shortcuts to quick money, profit from cheating others and false fame are petty pleasures. Good labour, family peace and good name are the great ones. At moments of choosing between them this verse guides. It does not ask for joyless living; it asks for joy that will still be there next year. A person who has once tasted the quiet satisfaction of an honest day finds the sharper thrill of a shortcut less tempting.

A story

Yayati's Clarity

This is the story of Yayati from the Adi Parva of the Mahabharata and the Bhagavata Purana. Yayati was a famous king of the lunar dynasty. He married Devayani, daughter of Shukracharya, and also took Sharmishtha, daughter of the asura king Vrishaparva, as a wife. Five sons were born to him: Yadu, Turvasu, Druhyu, Anu and Puru.

Learning of his relationship with Sharmishtha, Devayani complained to her father. Shukracharya was angry and cursed Yayati: "You will lose your youth and become an old man." Yayati lamented that he had not yet enjoyed pleasures to the full. Shukra gave a way out: if one of his sons would give his youth, Yayati could pass old age on to him.

Yayati asked his elder sons, and all refused. Only the youngest, Puru, out of love for his father, gave his youth and took on the old age. Yayati, having received his son's youth, immersed himself in many pleasures for a thousand years. But his desire was not quenched.

After a thousand years, clarity dawned on Yayati. The famous words ascribed to him: "Pouring ghee does not put out a fire; it burns higher. In the same way, adding pleasure to desires does not quench them; it makes them grow. Even if all the rice, gold, cattle and women in the world came to one man, his desire would not be satisfied. To give up desire is peace." He returned his son's youth, made Puru king and went to the forest to practise tapas.

Yayati learned by living that petty pleasures, however much enjoyed, give no fulfilment. His clarity showed him the way toward the higher joy. The story reminds us that the best mind is the one that sees desires against dharma as petty pleasures.

To reflect on

What petty pleasure am I chasing, and what greater joy is it pushing aside?
