Explanation

In this verse Valluvar gives an important warning. When we hear of one who desired grace and stood firm in the path of dharma, we naturally think of him as a lofty person. Yet even such a person, he says, will perish if he covets another's wealth and plots evil in order to seize it. In other words, the good deeds of the past do not become a shield for the wrong deeds of today.

The phrase 'pollaadha soozha' is crucial. It is not mere desire that causes the ruin; it is planning wicked schemes to fulfil that desire, such as cheating, conspiring and hurting others. The respect a man has earned through long austerity, learning and discipline can crumble through one evil scheme. Therefore, the person with a good name must be even more careful. The higher one stands, the worse the fall.

Grace and coveting face opposite directions. Grace takes another's sorrow as one's own; coveting wants to make another's possession one's own. These two cannot long dwell in one heart. One will conquer the other. So a person established in dharma must not rest quietly on his reputation but must pull out even the small weed of greed the moment it appears in his mind.

In our own day we hear of people who held responsible positions and spoke of dharma, and who fell after engaging in fraud out of love of money. Renewing one's honesty every day is the only protection against this.

A story

The Fall of Drona

This is the story of Dronacharya told in the Adi, Bhishma and Drona Parvas of the Mahabharata. Drona was the son of the sage Bharadvaja, unmatched in the Vedas and in the art of arms. In youth he lived in poverty. The tradition says he was pained that he could not even give his son Ashvatthama a cup of fresh milk. When his boyhood friend Drupada became king and Drona went to him for help, he was scorned: "A king and a poor man cannot be friends." That insult stayed in his heart as a wound that never healed.

When the Kurukshetra war came, he stood on Duryodhana's side. When Yudhishthira came to seek his blessing, Bhishma and Drona said, as the epic tells it, "A man is the slave of wealth; wealth is no one's slave. We are bound by the wealth of the Kauravas." Though they knew where dharma lay, they themselves admitted that wealth was the reason they stood on the other side.

In the war Drona set up the Chakravyuha formation. When the young Abhimanyu entered it, seven great warriors including Drona surrounded and struck him down against the rules of war. The teacher hailed as one who stood on the path of dharma lent himself to the evil act of encircling and killing a boy.

At the end, hearing the news "Ashvatthama is dead," he laid down his weapons. As he sat in meditation, Drupada's son Dhrishtadyumna cut off his head. One who had once been a teacher full of grace and learning fell because attachment to wealth and the scheme of revenge joined together.

It is a memorable witness to the verse: even one who had the standing of 'desiring grace and standing in the path' meets ruin when he lends himself to an evil plan.
