Explanation

Akhi agandra arivu is knowledge gained by subtle investigation and on a wide scale. A learned person may have read many texts and acquired a fine intellect. But if he, craving others' goods, does veriya seygai, empty or senseless acts, Valluvar says that knowledge is useless. Veriya means void, fruitless, lacking sense. His acts do not agree with his knowledge. This is the place in the chapter where Valluvar questions the purpose of learning.

It connects with the last verse of the chapter on decorum, where those who did not live in harmony with the world were called unlearned despite their learning. Here, those who covet another's property are called unwise despite their wisdom. Knowledge must show in action. Storing information is not knowledge. Some commentators take yaarmaattum as 'in anyone', meaning that he must not covet another's goods whether the owner is weak or strong.

In today's world we often read of educated, skilled officials who are corrupt and professionals who commit fraud. Their knowledge did not protect them. Dishonest knowledge is like a sharp knife that wounds the one who handles it. The message of the verse is that along with gaining knowledge, we must learn the ethics of its use. Education that does not govern desire has only sharpened the tool of the desire.

A story

Ravana and Kubera

This is Ravana's earlier history as told in the Uttara Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana. Ravana was a son of the sage Vishrava; his mother Kaikasi belonged to the rakshasa race. Ravana studied the Vedas, mastered the shastras, was unmatched at playing the veena and was an ardent devotee of Shiva. Through severe austerity he won boons from Brahma. The world marvelled at his learning and power.

Ravana's half-brother Kubera, lord of wealth, lived in the city of Lanka. Lanka had earlier been a city of rakshasas, and after they were driven out by Vishnu, it became a home for Kubera. Kubera had the rare aerial car, the Pushpaka, which Brahma had given him as a gift.

Ravana's mother Kaikasi urged him, "Look at your half-brother, rich and high in station. Should you not be so too?" After Ravana and his brothers had done tapas and won boons, he sent a message to Kubera: "Give Lanka to me." On the advice of his father, Kubera gave up Lanka and went to Alakapuri near Kailasa.

Even then Ravana's desire did not subside. He went with an army, fought Kubera and seized the Pushpaka too. Ravana, who took his brother's wealth and vehicle, made his learning and tapas servants of desire. His knowledge did not guide him to the good path.

At the end, that same desire drove him to seize Sita, and he carried her off in the same Pushpaka. His learning was of no use to a man who coveted others' goods and did mad deeds. The life of Ravana stands as a great warning of how a keen intellect can fall.
