Mahabharata, Vana Parva, the Yaksha's questionsThe Greatest Wonder in the World
From the Mahabharata. During their exile in the forest, the Pandavas, faint with thirst, came to a lake. One after another, four brothers drank its water without answering the questions of the Yaksha who guarded it, and fell lifeless. At last Yudhishthira came and patiently answered every question.
One of them was: 'What is the greatest wonder in the world?' Yudhishthira replied: 'Every day countless beings go to the abode of Death. Seeing this, those who remain still think they will live for ever. What could be more wonderful than that?'
The Yaksha, pleased, revealed himself as Dharma, the god of righteousness, Yudhishthira's own divine father, and restored all the brothers to life. The wonder Yudhishthira named, trusting a lightning-flash life as if it would last, is exactly what makes Arunagirinathar exclaim 'Ennae!' in this verse.
