Meaning

Maya does not let go of me, though the seven kinds of birth should be ended. When will the three great desires come to an end? O King! O God who embraces the shoulders of Valli, the lightning-creeper of the hill tribe! O guru of Shiva Shankara himself!

Explanation

Tradition counts seven kinds of birth: as gods, humans, animals, birds, creeping things, water creatures and plants. For the wheel of rebirth through all of these to stop, the three longings that turn it must stop: the longing for children, the longing for wealth, and the longing for the world's regard.

After the sigh of 'endru mudindhidumo', 'when will it end?', the poet calls on Murugan from two sides. He is the lover who embraces Valli, and he is the guru who taught Shiva himself. Love and wisdom meet in him, and the poet trusts that only one who has both can bring the three longings to their end.

Brihadaranyaka Upanishad

Yajnavalkya and Maitreyi

From the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad. When the sage Yajnavalkya decided to renounce the world, he wished to divide his property between his two wives. Maitreyi asked him: 'If this whole earth full of riches were mine, would I become immortal through it?' 'No,' said the sage. 'Your life would be like the life of the rich, but there is no hope of immortality through wealth.'

'Then what should I do with what will not make me immortal?' said Maitreyi. 'Tell me what you know.' Delighted, Yajnavalkya taught her about the Self.

The same Upanishad says that the wise who know the Self give up the longing for sons, the longing for wealth and the longing for worlds, and live as wandering renunciates. These are the very 'three longings' whose end Arunagirinathar yearns for in this verse.

To reflect on

Family, wealth, the regard of others: which of these three pulls on you most?
