Explanation

This verse gives two pieces of advice. One is never to admire and speak of oneself. The other is not to desire a deed that brings no good. The way that includes both is that a leader should not be proud of his success but should measure his deeds only by the good they bring.

The word 'viyavarka' includes admiring oneself. People dislike a leader who speaks of his own greatness. One who thinks that strength, knowledge and fame belong to him alone comes in the end to a fall. The word 'enjnjaanrum', always, shows that this holds both at the height of success and in defeat.

Commentators explain 'nandri payavaa vinai' in various ways. Parimelazhagar takes it as a deed that does not bring virtue; some others take it as a fruitless deed. Both are acceptable. In either case the idea is that one should not set his desire on a deed without knowing what it will bring.

In life today, praising oneself on social media and spending time on things that bring no good are new forms of this fault. Modesty and useful action are the ornaments of a leader. Humility keeps the door of learning open, and a leader who admires himself shuts it.

A story

Indra's Pride and Govardhana

In the Bhagavata Purana an incident is told from the time Krishna lived in Gokula. There the cowherds had a custom of making a sacrifice every year to Indra, the god who gives rain. That year Krishna said to them, 'It is Mount Govardhana that gives food to our cattle. So worship that mountain.' They did so.

When Indra learned of this, he felt his honour was lessened and grew angry. 'Are these little cowherds insulting me?' he said, and made hail and a great wind pour down. All of Gokula began to be drowned in water. The people and the cattle, afraid, took refuge in Krishna.

Krishna lifted Mount Govardhana with his little finger and held it like an umbrella. All the cowherds and the cattle came and stood beneath it. For seven days Indra poured down rain. Yet no one was harmed. At last Indra realised that his effort was in vain.

He came down from the sky and bowed to Krishna. 'In my pride I wronged you without knowing you. Forgive me,' he said. The tale goes on that the divine cow Kamadhenu also came and praised Krishna.

Indra admired his own greatness. He desired a deed that was useless and harmful to the people. These two faults join together here. Pride plunges a leader into ignorance; after he knows, humility alone protects him.

To reflect on

Is there something you are doing mainly to be admired, rather than because it does anyone good?
