Explanation

The first verse named the three faults of pride, anger and meanness. This verse names three more: miserliness, false pride that has lost its dignity, and unworthy joy. Valluvar calls them 'edham', faults in a king. The six faults in two verses together become a list of evils for a king to avoid.

'Ivaral' is the miserliness of not giving where one should. For a king this is a great fault, since he must give for the people's welfare, the country's defence and scholars. 'Maanpirantha maanam' is self-respect that has lost its dignity: that is, a stubbornness that acts against dharma in the name of protecting one's honour. True honour is high, but honour without dignity turns into mere arrogance.

'Maanaa uvakai' is joy lacking worth. Commentators give it two senses. One is rejoicing in the suffering of others, or in an unseemly act. The other is excessive pleasure-seeking. In both it is a blemish on the king's dignity.

These three are not only personal flaws but dangers for rule. A miserly king will refuse to spend even for the country's defence. One with false honour will break dharma to win a battle. One with unseemly joy will act without thought.

In life today these faults show when leaders behave without a sharing heart in order to hold power, when they refuse to admit a mistake in the name of 'my honour', and when they rejoice at the failure of others. When they go, leadership gains dignity.

A story

Duryodhana's Joy

In the Sabha Parva of the Mahabharata, one day Duryodhana came to the Maya Sabha built by Maya at Indraprastha. As he walked, one place seemed like a pool of water, and he lifted his clothes. But it was a floor of crystal. In another place he walked, thinking it was floor, and fell into water. At what looked like a door he struck a wall.

Duryodhana boiled with shame. Seeing the Pandavas' wealth and splendour, his envy grew. When he returned to his palace he told his uncle Shakuni of his worry. 'My heart burns to see the Pandavas' wealth. I too should one day enjoy this wealth along with them,' he said. Shakuni drew up the plan of the dice game.

In the dice assembly Yudhishthira lost one thing after another: wealth, kingdom, brothers, himself, Draupadi. Duryodhana rejoiced at each defeat. He was glad when he had Draupadi dragged into the assembly and insulted. The text says he even slapped his thigh and called her to it. This is 'maanaa uvakai', joy in the suffering of another, in a woman's humiliation.

His faults did not stop there. When the Pandavas later asked for their land, he showed miserliness with 'I will not give even land the size of a needle's point'. In the name of 'my honour' he set aside dharma and the counsel of elders. Miserliness, honour that has lost dignity and unworthy joy were all together in him.

In the end he fell in the Kurukshetra war. Those who saw him lying on the ground with his thigh broken thought of the faults he had done. Of the six faults, he had grown each one within himself. His wealth and army did not protect him.
