Explanation

This verse tells how a leader should go about finding fault. Its centre is that before blaming others one must remove one's own fault. A man who keeps faults in himself while trying to correct others finds that no one gives him a hearing, and his words carry no weight. When one who has corrected himself points out the faults of others, his word has weight.

Here the word 'iraikku' refers to the king. A king has the duty of finding the faults of others; to know the wrongs done in the land and to remove them is his work. But the fitness for that work begins with first removing his own fault. In hands that are not fit, punishment turns into injustice.

'Enkutram aakum' is framed as a question. The meaning is that no fault will come to him. One who has set himself right does not earn blame by examining others; on the contrary, his examination brings good to the country. Some commentators read it as saying that to see the faults of others after correcting oneself brings the leader no lack at all.

In life today, at home and at work, we easily see the faults of others and do not easily see our own. Those who first look at their own fault and mend it, and then guide others with love, are the true leaders.

A story

Drona's Test

In the Mahabharata tradition, an incident is told of Drona testing his pupils at the gurukula. It is a popular tale in the oral tradition, and it should be remembered that it is not found in every edition of the original text. Yet it suits the meaning of the verse very well.

One day Drona called Yudhishthira and said, 'Go into the city and bring me a wicked man.' Yudhishthira walked all over the city searching. After many days he returned and said, 'Teacher, I did not find any wicked man.' Drona smiled.

Then he called Duryodhana and said, 'Go into the city and bring me a good man.' He too went about the whole city. He returned and said, 'Teacher, I did not find any good man. Everyone has some fault.'

Then Drona said to his pupils: 'The way a man looks at others shows the state of his own heart. Yudhishthira kept no evil in his heart, so he saw only good everywhere. Duryodhana keeps faults in his heart, so he sees only faults everywhere.'

This tale shows the depth of the verse. One who first sees the faults of others is in truth seeing the faults of his own heart. One who has removed his own fault looks at others with love and fairness. Even when he examines the faults of others, he does not pass judgement but tries to mend.

In later years Yudhishthira stood on the path of dharma and became king, while Duryodhana, by his fault-finding mind, brought ruin on his own line. The lesson is that a leader must first purify his own heart.

When you last noticed a fault in someone else, had you first looked for the same fault in yourself?
