Explanation

This is the last verse of the chapter on the Correction of Faults. Here Valluvar points out that for a leader to let others know his wishes and aims is a fault. For one who acts while keeping his wishes hidden, the enemies find no way to plan their opposition.

In the phrase 'kaadhala kaadhal ariyaamai', the first 'kaadhala' means the things or deeds desired, and the second 'kaadhal' means the desire itself. The sense is that one can bring about what he desires without others knowing it. Some commentators also read it as guarding from enemies the desires that are one's weaknesses.

'Edhila edhilaar nool' means the schemes of enemies are useless. Enemies plan on the strength of knowing the leader's weakness. When that knowledge is not found, their plans lose their target. So secrecy here is a protection.

In life today, in business and in politics, one who displays his inner aims gives his rivals an opportunity. But this is not advice to deceive others; it means guarding one's own desire so that it does not become the door through which one's work is blocked. Secrecy lasts only until the work is done, and it needs a firm and calm mind. The wise leader keeps his aim hidden until the proper time, and then lets it be seen when it can no longer be blocked.

A story

Chanakya's Hidden Aim

In the Sanskrit play Mudrarakshasa there is the story of Chanakya, who is also called Kautilya. Only its general idea is told here.

Chanakya was resolved to make Chandragupta the king of Magadha. He did not reveal his aim easily to anyone. Rakshasa, who had been minister to the Nanda kings, was making many schemes against Chandragupta.

Chanakya told his plans only to a few who were very close. The aim in his mind, which was to call Rakshasa back to the court and make him help Chandragupta, remained hidden to the very end. Outwardly he seemed to be acting against Rakshasa.

Seeing Chanakya's acts, Rakshasa thought that he was trying to destroy him. So he shaped his plans against that thought. But since he did not know the true aim, his efforts failed one after another. In the end, the play concludes, he was accepted as Chandragupta's minister.

In this story Chanakya carried out his wish without letting others know it. The enemy's schemes became useless. The aim he hid for the good of the country brought good to the country in the end.

This is the depth of the verse: a leader must have the skill to guard his wishes within himself. Then the enemies' schemes become useless. Because his aim was pure, the skill of guarding it was itself a virtue. He gave no one a chance to block it before it was done.
