Explanation

This verse gives the clearest picture of vigilance. What happens if a stack of hay is placed before a fire? It burns to ashes in a moment. In the same way, Valluvar says, the life of one who does not guard before a fault or danger comes will perish. 'Varumunnark kaavaadhaan' is the base of the proverb 'protection before it comes'.

A stack of hay does not burn of itself; it burns only when a fire is near. To keep the fire away, and to keep the hay away, is protection. To do neither is ignorance. In the same way, avoiding the setting for a fault, and giving no room for a fault to grow, is guarding before it comes.

The word 'kedum' points to the complete ruin of a life. This is not a small loss. If a fault is not properly removed it can wreck a whole life. As a hay stack once burnt cannot be recovered, ruin brought by some faults does not return.

Some commentators take 'varumunnark kaavaadhaan' as 'one who does not avoid a fault before it comes', and others as 'one who does not protect himself before danger comes'. In both, the need of forethought is stressed.

This is clear in life today in health, finance and relationships. A small illness neglected grows. A small debt ignored becomes a burden. A small quarrel not settled becomes a split. It is easy to guard before it comes and hard to recover after.

A story

Dasharatha and Shravana

In the Ayodhya Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana, after Rama had gone to the forest, King Dasharatha lay in grief on his bed and told Kausalya an incident from his youth. It concerned a great mistake.

When Dasharatha was a prince he was skilled in the art of 'shabdavedhi', shooting an arrow by hearing a sound alone, without seeing. One night in the rainy season he went hunting on the bank of the Sarayu. In the dark he heard the sound of a pot sinking into water. Thinking it was the sound of an elephant drinking water, he shot an arrow in the direction of the sound.

At once a human voice cried out: 'Alas, who has killed me? I am a sage's son. I came to take water for my aged blind parents.' Dasharatha ran in alarm. The boy, Shravana, lay with the arrow in him. 'My parents are suffering from thirst. Take this water to them. Tell them of my death,' he said, and died.

Dasharatha took the water and went to the old couple. He told them what had happened. They touched their son's body, wept and wailed. Shravana's father cursed: 'You have killed our son; like us, you too will die of grief, parted from your son.' They climbed on their son's pyre and gave up their lives.

Dasharatha kept the curse in mind. But he set it aside as a past event. Many years later, at the time of Rama's going to the forest, that curse was fulfilled. Dasharatha died of the grief of parting from his son.

At the start Dasharatha shot hastily without identifying the sound. That was a lack in guarding before it comes. Had he thought a moment and made sure by sight, he could have avoided that event. One small carelessness became a grief that lasted all his life.
