Explanation

Valluvar here states clearly how a person should be tested before he is trusted. He is to be tested in four ways: righteousness, wealth, pleasure and fear of death. These four are true mirrors of a person's heart, for it is in these four that a person cannot hide his nature and reveals it.

The test of righteousness is to tempt him to stray from dharma and see whether he holds to it. The test of wealth is to offer riches and see whether he sells trust for money. The test of pleasure is to set pleasures before him and see whether he falls into the desires of the senses. The test of fear is to threaten him and see whether he abandons truth for fear of his life.

Only one who passes all four is fully trustworthy. One who passes one and fails another cannot be wholly trusted. For example, one who is unmoved by money may be moved by fear; one unafraid of danger may be deluded by pleasure. So the test must come from all four directions.

The phrase 'thiram therindhu' shows the subtlety of the examination. The test is not meant to torment the person but to know his true nature. Only then 'therapadum', trust may be placed. Done so, disappointment lessens in offices of state and in life's relationships.

Even today, when a bank chooses its accountant or a company its manager, it tests in many ways like this. The one who stands up to honesty, greed, temptation and fear alike is fit for responsibility.

A story

Chanakya's Four Trials of Ministers

From Kautilya's Arthashastra: Chanakya, also called Kautilya, the teacher of the Mauryan king Chandragupta, describes in his work a method called 'upadha' for selecting ministers. It contains four trials: dharma, wealth, desire and fear. We may note that these are the same four tests as in the Kural.

In the test of dharma, the king would have a trusted person urge the minister to some act against dharma. If the minister refuses, he is firm in righteousness. In the test of wealth, a great sum is held out to tempt him. In the test of desire, an alluring opportunity is placed before him. In the test of fear, he is threatened with danger to his life and watched for how he behaves.

One who passes all four is appointed chief minister or close counsellor. One who passes three is given a lesser charge, and one who passes two a lesser still. Each receives work according to his worth. In this way the king protects himself and the secrets of the state.

Chanakya used this very knowledge when establishing Chandragupta's rule. Rakshasa, who had been minister to the Nandas, was later brought as minister to the new court, because his faith and honesty towards his former king had been proved many times. It shows the wisdom of honouring a worthy enemy.

Thus the Kural's idea of testing a person from four angles before trusting him is found in India's political tradition as well. The tale teaches that the test is not for suspicion but to give the right responsibility to the right person.

To reflect on

Before you trust someone with something important, have you seen how they behave when tempted by money, pleasure or fear?
