Explanation

This verse states a very subtle truth. Even those who have learnt all rare texts, and who bear a name for faultlessness, will be found on close examination to hold some ignorance. The meaning is that no human being has perfect knowledge.

'Velirru' is the pale part, the place where knowledge has not filled. As in a full-grown tree there may be a pale, hollow core, even the best in learning have some empty places. Valluvar teaches that to praise and trust someone wholly without seeing these is a mistake.

Two lessons come from this. First, when choosing a person, one must not assume that because he is famous he is skilled in every field. One excellent in one field may be ignorant in another. So the work given to him should be in the field he knows.

Second, humility: we too are not perfect. If we search expecting no flaw in anyone, we can trust no one. So, understanding that flaws are natural, we should see whether the flaw is great or small, and whether it hinders our task.

Therefore, without blindly praising anyone as 'all-knowing', it is wise to examine, learn the limit of his knowledge, and then assign work.

A story

Ravana the Master of Vedas

From the Ramayana's portrayal: Ravana, king of Lanka, was no ordinary rakshasa. He was of the line of the sage Pulastya and son of the sage Vishravas. The Ramayana says he was well versed in the Vedas. He could praise Shiva with music in the Sama Veda chant. Tradition holds that he composed the Shiva Tandava Stotra. He was also a master of the veena.

When Hanuman entered his court in Lanka he marvelled at Ravana's radiance and majesty. He thought, "If this one were not a rakshasa and did not fall from dharma, he could have been lord even of the gods." Valmiki does not hide Ravana's learning or his power from austerity. He had received many boons from Brahma.

But in the midst of that learning lay a great ignorance. He did not understand how great a ruin comes from desiring another's wife. He did not listen to the good counsel of his brother Vibhishana, his wife Mandodari, and his grandfather Malyavan. Within him was the hollow of pride.

Though he had learning, austerity and boons, his knowledge did not shine fully. Enslaved to desire and pride, he destroyed his own family. It is proof that even one who has studied rare texts may have such darkness.

Ravana's story shows that one should not trust a man merely on seeing his learning and greatness, but should examine his conduct too. Being learned does not make a man clear in everything.
