Explanation

This is a very practical measure for judging a person. Virtue is one pan of the scale and fault the other. Weigh both and know the person by whichever pan is heavier, says Valluvar. The previous verse said no one is perfect; this verse answers how, then, to evaluate.

The word 'naadi', seeking, occurs twice. Seeking virtues and seeking faults are equal efforts. Most people see only the virtues of those they like and only the faults of those they dislike. Valluvar says judgement must not be given without seeing both.

'Migai naadi' is to see which is greater. This is not only a matter of number; the measure matters too. One grave fault may not be offset by many small virtues. So how heavy each is must also be weighed.

'Mikka kolal' means to accept what is greater. One in whom virtue prevails is to be regarded as fit, one in whom fault prevails as unfit. Thus one neither loses good people by magnifying small flaws nor trusts bad people by magnifying small goods.

In daily life this can be used in choosing workers and friends. Rather than wasting time seeking perfection, the practical wisdom is to choose the one in whom the good prevails.

A story

Rama Accepts Vibhishana

From the Valmiki Ramayana (Yuddha Kanda): Because Vibhishana advised Ravana in his court to return Sita to Rama, Ravana insulted him and drove him out. Vibhishana, with four ministers, crossed the sea to take refuge with Rama. The vanara warriors on the shore were startled.

Sugriva and others warned: "He is Ravana's brother, a rakshasa. He may be an enemy's spy. He must not be trusted. He should be killed." Some spoke with suspicion. Only Hanuman, observing Vibhishana's words and conduct, said, "He may be accepted."

Rama heard every opinion. Then he weighed Vibhishana's virtues and faults. The alleged faults: he was Ravana's kin and came from the enemy land. The virtues Rama saw: he had given up even his elder brother for the sake of dharma, he came without hesitation though he knew his own plight, and he spoke humbly.

Rama gave his judgement: "I shall never abandon one who has taken refuge in me. Even if he has faults, I shall give him shelter." He had Lakshmana bring seawater and crowned Vibhishana king of Lanka. The decision to accept the one in whom virtue prevailed later became the key to victory.

Vibhishana revealed the secrets of how Ravana might be killed. Because he knew Lanka's layout and the army's strength, the war became easier. Rama's decision, made by weighing fault and virtue, was thus proved right.

To reflect on

Think of someone you have dismissed over a single flaw. When you weigh their good against their fault, which side is heavier?
