Explanation

'Kattalai kal' is the touchstone used to know the quality of gold. When gold is rubbed on the touchstone its purity shows. In the same way, says Valluvar, to know whether a person is great or small, his own deeds are the touchstone.

What a person says about himself does not matter. The praise others give him is not always true. His position, family and wealth also do not show his inner nature. But the deeds he does, especially how he behaves in difficult moments, reveal his real nature.

Greatness is known by doing good to others, keeping dharma even in suffering, humility and courage. Smallness shows in selfishness, falsehood, cruelty and haste. Each of these appears in some act or in the failure to act.

A practical lesson follows. Before trusting someone, look at what he has done so far. A record of action is more reliable than promises. If someone has acted honestly for many years, he may be trusted.

The same measure can be applied to ourselves. Whatever we think of ourselves, our deeds decide our greatness or smallness.

The touchstone does not spoil gold; it shows its quality. Deeds likewise show a person's true colour. So patient observation of actions is the way to a good choice.

Valluvar is thus giving a test that anyone can apply without special skill: simply watch what the person does when it costs him something.

A story

The Trial of Harishchandra

From the Markandeya Purana: Harishchandra, king of Ayodhya, was famed as one who always spoke the truth. In the assembly of the gods the sage Vasishtha praised him. But Vishvamitra did not accept it. "Let us test him. He will fail in truth," he said. There began the trial that would rub Harishchandra's greatness on the touchstone.

Vishvamitra asked the king for a gift and received his whole kingdom. Then he demanded the sacrificial fee and took even what remained. Harishchandra sold his wife Chandramati and his son Rohitashva in Kashi. He himself worked as a keeper of the cremation ground, burning the dead. Even in cruel poverty he did not utter a falsehood.

One day Chandramati brought to the cremation ground the body of their son, who had died of a snake bite. She had no fee. Though he knew it was his own son, Harishchandra did not fail in his duty. "I cannot cremate without the fee," he said. Chandramati offered a portion of her garment.

At that moment the gods appeared. Shiva and others praised Harishchandra's truth and steadfastness. Rohitashva rose alive. The lost kingdom returned to Harishchandra, and even Vishvamitra accepted his greatness.

Harishchandra's fame was what others said; what proved his greatness was his deed. His conduct, which held to truth however great the suffering, became his touchstone.
