Explanation

'Attraar' are those who have no kin or relatives. Valluvar says to avoid trusting such persons and giving them responsibility. This is not said to scorn the poor. He points out that kin and community are a social restraint that keeps a person honest.

If a person has relatives, the fear that his deeds will bring disgrace to them restrains him from wrong. The thought that his family would be ashamed if he erred becomes a guard for him. But one who has no attachment to anyone has nothing to lose. He may dare to do anything.

'Pattrilar' and 'naanaar' are two deficiencies. One without attachment will show loyalty to no one. One without shame will not fear blame. With both, he will break a promise easily, seize another's property easily, and abandon you when the need comes.

Here 'kin' means not only blood relations but true friends, the villagers and the community with whom one is connected. To place in an important position someone who has no deep tie to anyone and is rooted nowhere is dangerous. There is no place where he must answer.

In practice this amounts to choosing after learning a person's background. Valluvar calls it wrong to hand great responsibility to someone about whom nothing can be known. Only known, rooted people who fear blame should be trusted.

The verse should be read humanely. The aim is not to shun the kinless; the right way is to know them well, extend trust step by step, and give responsibility after ties have formed.

A story

The Blue Jackal Who Became King

From the Panchatantra (Mitrabheda): Near a forest lived a jackal named Chandarava. One day, searching for food, it entered a town. Dogs chased it. Running, it fell into a vat of dye. When it rose, its whole body had turned blue. On returning to the forest, the animals who saw it were afraid. It was a shape they had never seen.

The jackal used its situation. "I am a new king created by God. I have come to rule the forest," it declared. Lion, tiger and elephant all believed on seeing its form. They did not know the jackal's birth, family or former life. It had no relatives. The animals accepted an unknown one as king.

The jackal, now king, grew very proud. It drove away its own jackal kin from its presence. "They are beneath my rank," it said, insulting them. It hid its earlier life and its relations. It had no attachment, no gratitude and no shame. An old jackal warned a lion, "He is not like you; examine him."

One moonlit night, a pack of jackals howled in the distance. Hearing it, the blue jackal could not control itself. By nature it howled too. In that sound its truth was revealed. The lion and the tiger realised that he was an ordinary jackal. In anger at being deceived, they attacked and killed him.

The animals' mistake was to trust, on the strength of his appearance, one who had no kin and no known background. Because he had no place where he had to answer, he easily became proud and deceived them. The tale says that trusting one without attachment or shame is dangerous.

To reflect on

Whom have you trusted on appearance alone, about whom you could not name a single person who knows them well?
