Explanation

'Kaadhanmai' is affection. 'Kandha' means taking as the basis. If, on the sole ground of affection for the unwise, one trusts him and gives responsibility, every kind of folly will come, warns Valluvar. That is, one must know that affection is one thing and fitness another.

One we love may be unwise. Loving him is no sin. But handing him important responsibilities such as the kingdom, wealth or counsel is wrong. For even if his intentions are good, his decisions will go wrong through lack of knowledge.

Valluvar here separates two values: affection and merit. Giving office on the basis of fondness is a common error. Giving key tasks to relatives, friends and favourites has ruined many nations and institutions.

The phrase 'pedhaimai ellaam tharum' says the harm does not stop at one. A wrong decision by an unwise man leads to the next wrong. In trying to correct it, further errors multiply. Events follow like a chain.

So affection should be kept as affection and merit as merit. We may give love to those we love; responsibility should go to the knowledgeable. This is the mark of impartial leadership.

The same is seen in private life. If a loved one is unwise about money, it is wrong to entrust savings to him. Showing love is one thing; granting authority another. One who grasps this difference protects both the relationship and the responsibility.

A story

Dhritarashtra's Love for His Son

From the Mahabharata (Adi Parva, Udyoga Parva): Dhritarashtra, king of the Kuru line, was blind from birth. He had boundless affection for his son Duryodhana. Because he was the eldest son, and because he wished to fulfil through him the loss of kingship caused by his own blindness, he hesitated to say anything against his son's wishes.

Duryodhana was not wise; he was full of pride and envy. He gave the Pandavas poison, tried to burn them in the house of lac, and insulted Draupadi at the dice game. On these occasions Vidura, Bhishma, Drona and Gandhari advised, "Restrain your son." But Dhritarashtra, out of affection, ignored them.

Vidura was a wise minister. When Krishna came to speak of peace, Vidura pleaded, "Give the Pandavas at least five villages." Schemers such as Shakuni gave Duryodhana the opposite counsel. Dhritarashtra, out of love, accepted his son's word. Later he lamented, "I could not refuse what my son wanted."

The result was the Kurukshetra war. In it all the hundred sons of Dhritarashtra died. Great heroes such as Bhishma, Drona and Karna fell. Hundreds of thousands of warriors lost their lives. One wrong trust, one decision, brought every folly in succession.

Dhritarashtra grieved all his life for failing to see that affection is one thing and merit another, and for handing the rule to a loved but unwise son. The tale is a great example of how love must not cloud leadership.

To reflect on

Where have you given someone responsibility because you love them, when it should have gone to someone who is able?
