Explanation

This verse gives a stern warning about trusting without examination. One who trusts someone without examining him will bring endless suffering not only to himself but also to his 'vazhimurai', his descendants, says Valluvar. The deep message is that one wrong trust does not end with one generation.

A king's wrong trust affects the whole country. If he trusts a minister without examining, that minister may plunder or help the enemy. The effect continues into the rule of the king's sons and grandsons. A contract made without examination by the head of a family may become a debt for his children.

'Theraan' is one who does not examine and learn. 'Thelindhaan' is one who has trusted. Both words refer to the same man: one who trusted without examining. His haste does not end by bringing suffering only to himself.

'Theera idumbai' is suffering that cannot be ended. Some mistakes can be mended by apology, some compensated with money. But some losses from wrong trust cannot be recovered. Life, a kingdom, a family's good name, once lost, cannot be regained.

So examining before trusting is a duty we owe not only to ourselves but to our descendants. This verse reminds us of that responsibility sternly.

A story

Shiva and the Demon Bhasmasura

From the Bhagavata Purana: The asura Vrikasura once performed austerities to Lord Shiva. Pleased, Shiva asked him, "What boon do you want?" He asked for a boon to kill others: "Let anyone on whose head I place my hand burn to ashes." Shiva, in his compassion, readily gave this boon. The asura therefore became known as Bhasmasura.

As soon as the boon was granted, the asura's intent was revealed. He wished to test even the Lord. "I shall see on your own head whether this boon is true," he said, trying to put his hand on Shiva's head. Shiva fled in fear around the three worlds. The asura chased him.

A boon given without examination turned into suffering for the giver. Because Shiva trusted without knowing the asura's nature, danger came even to him. In the end he appealed to Vishnu. Vishnu understood and took the form of a lovely Mohini to face the asura.

Bhasmasura, deluded by Mohini's beauty, wished to marry her. She said, "I will marry you if you dance as I do." He copied the dance she performed. In one gesture Mohini touched her head. Following her, the asura touched his own head. By the power of the boon he was burnt to ashes at once.

A boon given for good had created a crisis through an unexamined gift. The story says that before entrusting power to a person, one must learn his nature. This is what 'theera idumbai' means; on that day the three worlds were afraid.

To reflect on

What power, access or secret have you handed to someone before you truly knew them, and what could it cost beyond you?
