Explanation

Valluvar here pictures a family as an undying lamp and sloth as the soot that settles over it. A lamp has the power to burn on its own; its light fills the whole house. But if soot settles on its glass chimney, the light starts to dim, and if it is not wiped continually it goes fully dark. In the same way, though the glory of a family has shone for generations, if sloth settles on its members it slowly fades and vanishes.

The subtlety of the simile is that soot does not settle suddenly. It settles little by little each day. A single day's postponing, 'we shall see tomorrow', does not seem so harmful. But once it becomes a habit, the light of the family's labour, learning and good name falls off. The expression 'maaindhu kedum' indicates a slow melting away, not a sudden fall.

For 'kundra vilakkam' commentators give the sense of undiminished light or undiminished fame. This verse is a warning to children who suppose that the good name earned by their ancestors will naturally stay. That light does not stand by itself; every generation must wipe and protect it.

In today's world we know of big firms and famous families that collapsed through one generation's sloth. On the other side we also see people who rose from small beginnings through continued alertness and work. As one lights a lamp at home, it is our responsibility to do at least a little of our duty each day and keep the light of the family.

A story

The Family Lamp

The family of Sankaran, silk-sari weavers of Kanchipuram, had been famous for three generations. In the puja room of their house stood a big kuthuvilakku. They said grandfather Natarasan had lit it on his wedding day. From then that lamp was lit morning and evening. The women of the house daily wiped it, poured oil and changed the wick. 'The family lamp must never go out' was the saying of that house.

Under Natarasan's labour their trade gained its name. His son Muthuvel wove in his father's way and enlarged the business. But Muthuvel's son Sundaram grew up on his father's wealth. He reached the weaving shed late. He told himself, 'Not today, we'll see tomorrow.' The customers from his grandfather's time left one by one for other shops.

One morning grandmother Meenakshi went to light the lamp in the puja room. Soot had settled in the lamp's glass chimney and the light was dim. 'Sundaram, come here,' she called. She gave him a cloth and said, 'Wipe this and see.' When he wiped, the lamp shone brightly. 'Did you see? If you postpone for a day soot settles; if you wipe every day the light stays. A family is just like that,' she said.

Those words moved Sundaram's mind. Next day at dawn he opened the weaving shed. He sat at the loom and began to learn the old pattern his grandfather had woven. He went in person to the lost customers, asked their pardon and showed new cloths. Slowly the business recovered.

Years passed. Now Sundaram's grandson lights the same lamp. 'Grandfather said it must be wiped every day,' he teaches his younger sister. The light of the family lamp still stands in that house. It stands not by oil and wick alone but by continued small duties.

To reflect on

What soot must I wipe away today so that my family's light does not dim?
