Explanation

This verse tells of a double result of sloth: the family decays and faults multiply. The first is understood from the word itself. The second is somewhat deeper. Why do faults multiply? Because empty time gives room to evil thoughts. A mind not engaged in work seeks diversion, and diversion later turns into bad habits. Time wasted opens the way for gambling, drink, gossip and envy. The proverb 'an empty mind is the workshop of evil' says the same.

The phrase 'maanda unjatrilavar' means those without glorious effort, that is, not mere effort but excellent, high and useful effort. It implies that even if someone pretends to labour, if that labour is not worthy, it too is akin to sloth. 'Unjatru' is an old Tamil word for continued striving.

On the other side, the first part of the verse, 'kudimadindhu kutram perugum', also hints that faults multiply because of the fall of the family. When a family weakens, its members have more chance of losing discipline. So the two become a cycle that feeds each other.

In today's society we see that joblessness and aimlessness sow bad habits. When the mind is engaged in good activity, study, art, service or trade, the room for evil shrinks. So removing sloth is a fort not only for income but for conduct.

A story

The Idle Hours in the Temple Mandapam

In a village near Kumbakonam there was once a family that wove lamp wicks for the temple's services. Wick-weaving was their hereditary trade. On festival days thousands of wicks were needed. The eldest son of the family, Dandapani, had been very energetic as a boy. But after his father died his interest in the trade waned.

Instead of going to the weaving shed each morning he sat in the temple mandapam watching the fun. There some young men used to play cards for money. At first he only watched, then he began to play himself. What began as 'just a little while' went on through the day.

He lost at the game and took loans. He pawned the family's jewels. His wife Kalaivani tried telling him many times. 'If you weave there is food; what will you get from this game?' she said. Dandapani grew angry and snapped at her. The weaving shed lay closed. The temple priests began buying wicks from another village.

Dandapani's son Senthil grew up watching his father. He too wandered the streets without going to school. The house sank in poverty. Kalaivani worked in other homes to keep the family. Scenes of gambling creditors shouting at the door became common on that street.

One day the old temple priest Manickam called him. 'Dandapani, the wicks your father wove burned in this temple for forty years. Now that light is not in your house. Your son is growing up watching you,' he said. The words shamed Dandapani. From that day he gave up the game. He opened the weaving shed again. But it took long to recover the lost years and the honour of the family.

The tale is an example of how empty time opens the way for bad habits, and how one man's sloth multiplies faults in his family.
