Explanation

This verse states the cruelty of sloth in a harsh word. One who lives binding sloth to himself is a 'pedhai', one without wisdom, says Valluvar. His harm does not end with him. The warning of the verse is that the very family in which he was born perishes even before his own ruin. The phrase 'thanninum mundhu' is very sharp. Even before one falls by his own sloth, the family who laboured for him and those in his charge wither.

In 'madimadik kondozhugum' the doubled word 'madimadi' indicates an unbroken union with sloth. He did not get sloth by chance; he has accepted it as his way of life. Some explain it as 'walking, having taken sloth lovingly to himself'. To fall into sloth is one thing; to embrace it willingly is another. The second state is the folly meant here.

If the head of a family, the eldest son or someone who ought to work is like this, the result goes not only to him but to wife, children and parents. The family's education, health and honour all depend on his labour. If he lies idle they fall one by one.

Today these words are meant not to frighten us but to wake us. They remind us that sloth is not merely an individual's problem, and that we are responsible to those who depend on us.

A story

The Landlord's House

This is the family story of a landowner near Madurai. Veluchami owned large lands. His wife Deivanai was a good housewife. Their only son was Murugesan. Murugesan was brought up in pampering from an early age. He lay in bed until ten in the morning. He would not go to the fields. 'Must I work too? What father has gathered is enough,' he would say.

After Veluchami died, all the property came to Murugesan. With no supervision of the fields the labourers worked carelessly. The yield fell. Irrigation was neglected and the wells ran dry. Merchants came and bought the crops at low prices. Murugesan paid no attention. Creditors began to come.

His mother Deivanai tried telling him many times. 'Son, your father went down to this land at dawn and laboured. When you rise, half the day is gone,' she said. Murugesan did not listen. In some years the lands had to be sold one by one. At last the big house the family lived in went on mortgage too.

Unable to bear the sorrow, Deivanai fell ill. Only when he sat by his mother's bed did Murugesan understand the consequence of his acts. In a faint voice his mother said, 'The family your father built has collapsed in your hand.' Those words shook him. But what was lost did not return. His mother did not recover from that illness.

Murugesan began to work afterwards. But had he awakened earlier, his mother and the family would have been saved. He did not give up sloth in one day; only after years of losses. His sloth destroyed his mother's health and the family property before it destroyed him.

The word 'thanninum mundhu' came true in that family. While he was still living, the family fell.

To reflect on

Who bears the cost of my sloth besides me?
