Explanation

The earlier verses told the evils that come from sloth. This verse shows the hopeful other side: if sloth is removed, the family's faults vanish. 'Kudiyaanmai' is the responsibility of running a family. 'Ulvandha kutram' are the deficiencies that have entered that management: debt, discord, decline. Valluvar assures that all these will slowly end if one member of the family gives up his sloth.

For 'madiyaanmai' commentators give the sense of ruling over sloth, that is, gaining mastery over it instead of being its slave. Others take it as the state of managing sloth. Either way, what is indicated is that a person conquers his sloth and takes lordship over it.

The word 'oruvan', one man, gives a beautiful hope. The whole family need not change at the same moment; one person changing is enough. As lighting one lamp lights up a dark room, one man's labour slowly wakes the whole family. Others begin to change by watching him.

The commentators also remind us that a household is a living chain; when one link grows strong the whole chain bears more weight. That is the quiet promise of the verse.

If today we feel that faults surround our family, office or town, instead of waiting for 'someone to change', we can take the first step ourselves. That one man may be us.

A story

Savitri's Resolve

This is the story of Savitri and Satyavan told in the Vana Parva of the Mahabharata. Savitri was the daughter of Ashvapati, king of Madra, born through his austerity. When she came of age, her father permitted her to go and seek her husband herself. She chose Satyavan, son of the blind king Dyumatsena who lived in the forest. The sage Narada said, 'He is excellent in character, but within a year from now he will die.'

Hearing this Savitri did not change her decision. 'Having chosen once, I shall not change,' she said. She married Satyavan and happily accepted forest life. The family was poor; the father-in-law's kingdom had been taken away. But she never grew weary. She performed her daily tasks briskly. She served her parents-in-law. She bore all the work of the household herself.

The last day of the year came. Before it Savitri kept a fast for three days. When Satyavan went into the forest to cut wood she went with him. As he climbed a tree he felt a headache, came down and laid his head in her lap. At that moment Yama came with his noose and took away his life.

Savitri followed Yama. Many times Yama told her to turn back. But she did not flag. The dharma of her speech pleased Yama. Each time he gave her a boon, saying she might ask anything except Satyavan's life. She asked for and received her father-in-law's sight and kingdom and sons for her father. At last, when she asked for a hundred sons for herself, since this was not possible without her husband, Yama returned Satyavan's life.

Savitri's firm effort removed all the faults of a family. Blindness was removed, the lost kingdom returned and the son's life was restored. A woman's resolve is the witness to 'kudiyaanmai ulvandha kutram oruvan madiyaanmai maatra kedum'.
