Explanation

The word-play in this verse is worth noting: 'madiyai madiyaa ozhugal', 'kudiyaik kudiyaaga'. For the first, 'madiyai madiyaa', commentators give two senses. Some take it as 'recognising sloth as sloth and removing it'. Others take it as 'making sloth perish', that is, destroying it. In both the idea is one: first identify sloth, then eliminate it. Likewise 'kudiyaik kudiyaaga' means raising the family to be a true family, a family of honour.

Why is identifying sloth the first step? Because sloth tends to hide itself under other names. It comes in many masks: 'rest', 'we can see later', 'my mood is not right today'. Until one realises its true name one cannot oppose it. As only one who knows the disease can cure it, only one who knows sloth can end it.

The phrase 'kudiyaik kudiyaaga venduvar' points to the ideal of lifting a family. It gives the wider view that one's effort is not only for himself but for the future of his family. If we think that an individual's sloth harms only himself, we may let it be; but when we realise it harms the family, our mind wakes.

In life today we may examine our daily habits once and decide which must change for the good of our family.

A story

Krishna Who Rose at Brahma Muhurta

In the tenth skandha of the Bhagavata Purana the daily life of Krishna in Dwaraka is described. Krishna rose every day in the Brahma muhurta, before even the cock crowed. Though his wives slept beside him, he would rise and meditate on the Lord. In that early morning quiet, thinking of his Self, he began the day with a clear mind.

Then he bathed, put on clean clothes and performed the sandhya worship. He made offerings in the fire. He bowed to cows and Brahmins and made gifts to them. The Purana says he gave cows with gold-capped horns and silk covers to Brahmins. This happened daily. After that he sat in the royal assembly and heard the grievances of his people.

As head of the Yadu clan and king of Dwaraka he had many responsibilities. Yet he postponed nothing. He met his friends, heard the messages from kings, and protected those who sought refuge. He did not fail to spend time with his wives and children. His life was full of order and sweetness.

What we should notice in this description is that even of the Lord himself the day is described as free of sloth. Though a divine incarnation, Krishna fulfilled every duty properly and without delay. The picture presented is that his family and clan flourished as a result.

This is an excellent example of 'madiyai madiyaa ozhugal'. His daily life, giving sloth no place, stands as a model for how the head of a family should live to raise his family and people.
