Explanation

In this verse Valluvar names four vessels of ruin: nedunir, maravi, madi, thuyil. Nedunir is delay that keeps stretching things out, putting off to tomorrow what should be done today. Maravi is forgetting one's duty, inattention. Madi is the sloth of not acting. Thuyil is sleep beyond what is needed. These four are related to one another; when one comes, the others follow.

The metaphor 'kaamakkalan' is very beautiful. 'Kalan' is a ship or vessel, and 'kaamam' here means desire. That is, those fated to perish take these as ships they climb into willingly. These ships look pleasant. Delay seems like rest, forgetfulness like peace, sloth like relaxation, sleep like comfort. But they carry those who board them towards destruction. So Valluvar's calling them 'pleasure boats' is a bitter irony.

More than keeping these four away from us, the habit of recognising them matters. Am I putting off a task today? Have I forgotten something? Am I in needless rest? Am I sleeping beyond measure? These questions themselves protect us.

In modern life new vessels have also come: news feeds and entertainment apps. They attract us sweetly and melt away our time. We can understand them by adding them to Valluvar's list of the four vessels.

A story

Lakshmana Who Woke Sugriva

From the Kishkindha Kanda of the Ramayana: after killing Vali, Rama gave Sugriva the kingdom of Kishkindha. Sugriva had promised to gather the vanara army to search for Sita. But on gaining the kingdom he sank into palace pleasures. He passed time in drink, music and the company of women. He kept putting things off to tomorrow and the day after. The rainy season came and went, and autumn had arrived.

Rama spent the whole rainy season in grief on Mount Pravarshana. When the rains were over and Sugriva did not come, he grew worried. 'Has he forgotten the arrangements for searching for Sita?' he said to Lakshmana. Lakshmana, angry, took up his bow and set out for Kishkindha.

At the gate of Kishkindha the vanaras were afraid to see Lakshmana's wrath. The twang of his bow shook the palace. Sugriva woke from sleep at the sound. His wife Tara calmed Lakshmana. Facing Lakshmana, Sugriva admitted, 'I realise my fault; I shall gather the armies at once.'

At once Sugriva gave orders to Hanuman and sent vanara forces in all directions. The force that went south under Hanuman, Angada and Jambavan finally found Lanka. Sugriva's delay and forgetfulness had cost days in the task of recovering Sita. But he finally fulfilled his duty.

In this event the four were present together: nedunir (delay), maravi (forgetting the promise), madi (sloth sunk in pleasure) and thuyil (drunken sleep). They fit Valluvar's 'kedunirar kaamakkalan' exactly. Royal pleasure drew him towards ruin; Lakshmana's warning rescued him.

To reflect on

Among the duties I postpone, which forgotten promise lies hidden?
