Explanation

This verse states the most severe result of sloth: servitude. If sloth lodges in a person, his family slowly weakens. A weakened family cannot defend itself against its enemies. In the end it must become slave to the foe who subdues it. The 'enemy' here is not only an open adversary; it may also mean a creditor, a greedy person or a cheat.

In 'madimai kudimaikkan thangin' the word 'thangin' is important. A few days' delay or rest is not a fault. The danger arises only if sloth settles and stays as the character of a family. When the tradition of labour is abandoned generation after generation and sloth becomes the family habit, that family passes under the control of outsiders.

In history many families and kingdoms have fallen this way. Sloth within opened the way to the enemy. Enemies do not win by their strength alone; the weakness of the opponent becomes their opportunity. So the first wall of defence is each person's labour and alertness.

In our life today servitude comes as debt, bad habit and dependence. We see the idle in labour entangled in a net of debt and becoming slaves of creditors. This verse asks us to guard our self-reliance through labour.

A story

The Gods Who Grew Careless

This tale is told in the Vishnu Purana and the Bhagavata Purana. Once Indra ruled heaven as the chief of the gods. Full of wealth and pride, he grew careless of his daily duties. One day the sage Durvasa gave him a garland of flowers as a gift. Indra carelessly placed it on his elephant Airavata. The elephant lifted it with its trunk, threw it down and trampled it.

Durvasa, enraged, cursed him: 'Through the pride of wealth you have lost attention; may your wealth perish.' By the curse Indra and the gods lost their power. The lustre of heaven waned. Taking advantage of this, the asuras under Mahabali conquered heaven. The gods lost their abode and had to submit to the asuras.

Frightened, the gods took refuge first with Brahma and then with Vishnu. Vishnu told them a way: 'Churn the ocean of milk and take out the nectar. For that the help of the asuras is also needed. Act peacefully with them for some time.' The gods had to recover what they had lost through labour.

Using Mount Mandara as the churning rod and the serpent Vasuki as the rope, the gods and asuras churned the ocean of milk. It was long and hard labour. At last the nectar appeared. Through Vishnu's Mohini form it came to the gods. After that the gods regained strength and recovered their world.

This Purana shows that carelessness, pride and sloth pushed even the gods under the dominion of the asuras. What brought recovery was alertness and hard labour. It is the Puranic form of 'madimai kudimaikkan thangin than onnaarkku adimai pugutthi vidum'.
