From the Mahabharata (Mausala Parva)The End of the Yadavas
From the Mahabharata. Thirty-six years after the war at Kurukshetra, the Yadavas of Dwaraka were steeped in wealth. Wealth brought arrogance, and arrogance brought drink.
One day some Yadava youths dressed Krishna's son Samba as a pregnant woman and mockingly asked the visiting sages Vishvamitra, Kanva and Narada, "What child will she bear?" The angry sages cursed them: "He will bring forth an iron pestle, and it will destroy your clan." And so it happened. In fear the Yadavas ground the pestle to powder and scattered it in the sea, and the powder washed ashore and sprang up as tall rushes.
Later the Yadavas went on pilgrimage to Prabhasa. There they drank without limit. Drunk, they began reopening old quarrels from the war. Satyaki and Kritavarma traded insults; words became argument, argument became a brawl. They tore up the rushes growing on the shore, and in their hands the rushes became iron clubs. Father struck son and friend struck friend, and within hours the Yadava clan was destroyed.
Seeing this, Krishna knew his work on earth was done. He sat beneath a tree in the forest and withdrew into yoga.
Counsel from a drunkard is a sorrow; intoxication can destroy an entire clan.
