Explanation

If clear water is let run over red earth it turns reddish; over salty ground it takes on a brackish taste; across a fertile field it gathers sweetness. Water has no wish of its own to change, yet the land it touches changes it. Valluvar takes this plain scene and uses it to show how a person's understanding relates to the circle he joins.

Here 'arivu' is not merely bookish knowledge. It is the base of how we think and of what we regard as good or bad. Our company gives us that outlook or corrects it. Commentators draw out a subtle point in this verse: although water is altered by the soil, it is not wholly destroyed, and it can become pure again. In the same way, a person who changes his company may recover his understanding, so the verse also carries a note of hope.

Today a child's speech and manner reflect the home and the friends among whom it grows. A person who joins an office group that constantly complains finds that within a few months he too has begun to complain. As long as we have any freedom to choose the land, it is wisdom to think about the ground over which we are going to flow.

The verse should not make us fearful of everyone; it should make us deliberate. Water that knows where it is going can be guided to a field it can nourish, and a mind that knows its influences can choose the ones that raise it.

A story

The Kaveri Water and the Potter's Clay

In a temple town on the bank of the Kaveri lived a potter named Arangan. A boy called Muthu had joined him as an apprentice. One day the two went down to the river. The potter filled a pot with clear Kaveri water and then, little by little, poured it over the red earth of the bank, the clay, and a salt-crusted hollow, letting it run.

"Look, Muthu. It is the same water. Yet each stream now has a different colour and a different taste," he said. The boy watched in wonder. The water that ran over the red earth had turned reddish. When he tasted the water from the salty hollow, it was bitter.

"What would happen if this same water went to the temple tank?" the potter asked. "There the fragrance of flowers and the purity of the sacred bath would make even this water holy theertham. It is the land that decides what the water becomes. People are the same, Muthu. The friends with whom you walk are your land."

That evening Muthu made a decision. He had been wandering the streets with some boys who gambled at cards, and the potter's words shook him. From the next day he began to attend the Thirumurai class at the temple, and he spent time with the boys who sang there.

Within a few months a clarity came into his speech. A steadiness came into the hand that shaped clay on the wheel. One day his old friends taunted him. Muthu did not reply; he only smiled. His mind had become water flowing over calm ground.

Arangan noticed it and said, "Water never loses its nature, Muthu. But it needs the right ground. You are now walking on a clean path."

From that day, every pot the potter made carried the steadiness of Muthu's hand.

To reflect on

If your mind were water, over what kind of ground has it been flowing lately?
