Explanation

The earlier verses showed how much company matters for those who lack goodness of mind. This verse adds a further subtlety: even the noble, who possess goodness of mind in full, still need good company. 'Emaappu' means a fortress, a protection, a dependable support. However pure the heart, a wall of protection around it makes it safer still.

A warrior, however skilled, finds his spirit higher in battle when a trustworthy force stands behind him. In the same way, a noble person may rely on his wisdom and conduct, but the temptations and threats of the world test them each day. When good companions are close, meeting those tests becomes easier.

There is also humility hidden here. The wise do not carry the pride of 'I need no one; I am good by myself.' They do not trust themselves so completely that they stop seeking the support of good people, and that is itself a mark of their wisdom. To feel that even the strong need a fortress is a form of wisdom.

Even today we see that those in high office, or leading in their fields, keep honest advisers around them. Behind their success stands that fortress. The lesson for the rest of us is simple: if the noble do not neglect good company, we certainly should not. We can build our own small fortress of two or three trustworthy friends, and visit it often.

A story

The Companion Arjuna Chose

From the Mahabharata: The war of Kurukshetra had become certain. Both sides sent envoys to many kingdoms seeking allies. Krishna, king of Dwaraka, was related to both houses, and so Duryodhana and Arjuna went to Dwaraka on the same day to meet him.

When they reached the palace, Krishna was asleep. Duryodhana arrived first and sat on a high seat at the head of the bed. Arjuna, who came a little later, stood humbly with folded hands near Krishna's feet. When Krishna woke, the first person he saw was Arjuna, standing at his feet.

Krishna gave them both a choice. "On one side, myself, but I will not take up weapons in the war. On the other side, my great force, the Narayani Sena. Which do you want?" Since Arjuna had been seen first, the first choice was his.

Without hesitation Arjuna said, "I want you, Krishna. You are a greater help to me than an army." Duryodhana was delighted. "The great army is mine," he said, laughing in his joy without understanding.

Arjuna was supreme in archery and in conduct, and no one could say he was weak in mind. Yet he knew that he needed a fortress. When he faltered in the battlefield, it was Krishna, standing as his charioteer, who taught him the Gita and dissolved his hesitation.

The incident shows how strong a fortress good company is even to one full of goodness of mind. That a warrior who had everything chose a still greater companion is itself the mark of his wisdom.
