Explanation

This verse separates mind from company. A person's understanding, or inner sense, arises from his own mind. But the word the world speaks of him, 'such is this man', arises from the circle to which he belongs. However good we may be within, the outside world measures us by looking at who stands near us.

Commentators such as Parimelazhagar read 'innaan' as 'a man of such and such a kind', a phrase that can carry either praise or blame. So if the company is good, praise comes; if it is bad, censure follows.

There is an uncomfortable truth here. The world cannot look directly into our minds. It sees only our friendships and associations. Even if we act justly, if we are often seen with wrongdoers, people will think of us as like them. Today even the online connections of a young job seeker help to make his name. So, just as we guard our hearts, we must also guard our reputation through the company we keep.

At the same time, the verse can be read as a gentle encouragement. Our own mind is ours to cultivate and no one can take it from us, whereas reputation is slower and more fragile. A person who tends both with equal care will be understood rightly both by himself and by others.

A story

The Friendship of Karna

From the Mahabharata: Karna grew up as the foster son of a charioteer. Although he matched Arjuna in archery, in the arena at Hastinapura he was mocked because of his birth. At that moment Duryodhana stepped forward and made him king of Anga. From that day Karna was Duryodhana's lifelong friend.

Karna's heart was lofty. He became famous as a donor who gave generously to all who asked. It was his vow that after his worship of the Sun, whatever anyone requested of him he would give. But the circle in which he moved was the court of Duryodhana. There Shakuni's schemes and the humiliation of Draupadi were played out. At such times Karna had misgivings in his heart, but for friendship's sake he kept silent.

The world did not look into his mind. It looked at those who stood beside him. So on the side of the Pandavas the name of Karna was spoken with bitterness. Before the war, Kunti met him and told him the truth that he was her eldest son, begging him to join the Pandavas. It was a deep trial for Karna. Yet saying that he was bound by his debt to Duryodhana's friendship, he refused.

As Kunti stood in tears, Karna gave her one promise: that he would not kill her other four sons, only Arjuna. Though his reason knew the truth, he could not free himself from the grip of his circle.

He took his decision firmly, and he knew its price. He may well have realised, "Because of my friendship, my name will always be spoken together with this side." Across the centuries people marvel at Karna's generosity, and at the same time they grieve that he stood in the wrong assembly.

This is what the story teaches: however lofty a man's mind, the company he joins decides the name the world gives him.

If a stranger judged you only by the people you are often seen with, what would they conclude?
