Explanation

With the word 'marumai', this verse touches one of the great questions of the Aram section: what lies beyond this life? In the first half Valluvar says that goodness of mind bears fruit in the life to come. Classical commentators such as Parimelazhagar take marumai as the state after rebirth or the joys of a higher world; others see in it the fame and benefit that continue after a person has died. Whichever view is taken, the essence is that goodness of mind yields a lasting good.

The word 'akhdum', 'even that', deserves attention. Valluvar says that even this fruit of a good mind is made firm by the goodness of company. A person may begin with good intentions, but to remain steady in them he needs the fellowship of good people. Otherwise he may stumble on the way and lose even the merit he has gathered.

This is why, in our tradition, penance and service are often undertaken among a gathering of devotees. A vow kept alone is harder to sustain than one kept alongside many with the same aim. Faith that goodness bears fruit is itself strengthened by company. Hence a person who desires fruit in the world to come does best to seek good company in this one, which is the surest investment.

The verse neither promises nor denies any particular afterlife. It simply says that whatever good a person's inner life builds is guarded most reliably when he is not walking alone.

A story

Kuchela's Handful of Rice Flakes

From the Bhagavata Purana: In the gurukula of the sage Sandipani, Krishna and Kuchela (Sudama) studied together. Krishna later became king of Dwaraka, while Kuchela lived in his village as a simple brahmin in dire poverty. His mind was always pure. Even in hunger he never held out his hand to others.

One day his wife said in tears, "The children are wasting away with hunger. Your schoolmate is king in Dwaraka. Go and see him." Kuchela at first refused. At last he agreed, saying, "I will ask for nothing; merely seeing him is enough." He tied a handful of beaten rice (aval), which was all they had in the house, in a ragged cloth and set out.

At the gate of Dwaraka the guards stopped him. But the moment Krishna learned he had come, he ran down from his throne and embraced his friend. With his own hands he washed Kuchela's feet and, together with his queen Rukmini, honoured him as a guest.

Kuchela shyly tried to hide his rice flakes. Krishna smilingly snatched the packet, said, "How pleasing this is when it is given in love!" and ate a handful. They say that as he reached for the second handful, Rukmini held his hand to stop him.

Kuchela asked for nothing. When he reached home, he found a mansion standing where his hut had been. Even with wealth his mind did not change, and he lived simply in remembrance of the Lord.

Kuchela's goodness of mind protected him in his poverty. But his friendship with Krishna secured and sustained that goodness. It is an example of how good company becomes a guard for our virtue.
