Explanation

Two benefits are named in this verse. The first is 'echcham', a word that can mean children, the next generation, or what a person leaves behind. Whichever the commentators choose, the message of the first half is that the purity of one's mind continues as good even after one is gone. The children of one who lives with a pure heart grow up carrying the fragrance of that home.

The second benefit concerns actions. For one whose company is pure, says Valluvar, no undertaking fails to end well. This is not a guarantee of success in every circumstance. It is a statement based on experience: things done after consultation with good people usually end well. Good people point out errors, hold back haste, and support us when we grow weary.

A person starting a business today who takes the advice of good guides avoids many mistakes in advance. In a family, decisions made after listening to the elders usually stay firm. So when a pure heart and pure company come together, what one has done does not end with oneself; it goes on yielding good.

There is also a quiet link between the two halves. The legacy we leave is largely made of the deeds we complete well, and the deeds we complete well are largely made possible by the company we keep. A person who cares for his legacy must therefore care for his circle.

A story

The Satsang Mandapam

In a temple town of the south lived a cloth merchant named Venkatesan. His heart was pure, but he was new to trade. In the first year of his shop he made many hasty decisions. One day an elderly friend of his father said, "Come, my boy, to the satsang in the temple hall every Saturday evening."

In that hall merchants, teachers and retired officers gathered. They sang the Thirumurai and the pasurams, and afterwards talked about the problems of life. At first Venkatesan only listened. Little by little he began to share the troubles of his shop as well.

Once a large order came. It would bring a good profit, but it required using inferior thread. Venkatesan raised the matter in the gathering. An experienced man there said, "Profit is for a season, a good name is for generations. If you lower the quality, your name will fall with the very first cloth." The others agreed.

Venkatesan declined the order. He was anxious for a few days. But the next month, a large temple administration that had heard of his honest name came looking for him to supply cloth for the festival. That opportunity changed the future of his shop. "This quality belongs only to that house," the townsfolk said of the festival cloth.

Those evenings were scales on which the week's decisions were weighed; spoken aloud, the mistakes showed themselves.

Many years later, when his son took charge of the shop, Venkatesan said, "It was not my heart alone that kept us clean. It was also the good people who sat in that hall on Saturdays. You go there too." The son began to sit in the same hall.
