Explanation

The previous verse said to verify through another spy. This verse extends that method: spies should not know one another, and only when the words of three agree should it be taken as true. If spies knew each other they might consult and tell a false report in the same way, or one might follow the other's words. Only when they are unaware of each other are their reports independent.

The number 'three' has a rational basis. One person's account is one witness; two persons' accounts are two witnesses; but even if the two agree it might be by chance or by a common deception. When three agree, doubt falls greatly. The second witness confirms; the third guards that confirmation. Some commentators take the number as a practical counsel: in any situation it is good to get confirmation in three separate ways.

In today's news world, before believing a piece of information we can see whether the same information comes from three separate trustworthy places. A report shared by many on social media is no proof of truth, since all of them may have come from one source. The independence that Valluvar speaks of, not knowing one another, is very important.

A story

The Pilgrims and the Swollen Stream

A walking pilgrimage group of eighty went from Tiruchendur to Tirupparankundram. The leader, Shanmugam, had conducted this pilgrimage every year. That year, because of a sudden rain, a forest stream on the usual route had swollen. It became necessary to learn which other path was safe.

Shanmugam sent three young men in three different directions. He told each of them separately, in such a way that they did not know of one another, 'Ask the village people whether that route can cross the stream.' The first young man went by the southern path. The second went east. The third set out through a village.

By evening all three returned. The first said, 'A farmer told me the old stone bridge to the north-west is safe.' The second said, 'The temple priest said the bridge is old but firm and bullock carts are crossing.' The third said, 'Many villagers use that same bridge, and little girls and old people cross it.'

The words of all three agreed. Shanmugam was reassured. Next morning the whole group crossed the stream by the stone bridge. Everyone reached the other bank safely. Then they walked on, singing 'Vel Vel' at the shrine of Murugan.

'Do not believe what one person says; believe when the same news comes from three directions,' Shanmugam used to tell new young men on each pilgrimage.

To reflect on
