Tell a good omen for the people of Vedapuram. Poverty is going; wealth is coming; learning is growing; sin is vanishing. If the educated man cheats and sins, he will go, he will go, he will go crying 'aiyo'!
In Vedapuram trade is growing; industry is growing; the worker will prosper. கோணங்கி அல்லது குடுகுடுப்பைக்காரன் இரவில் வீடு வீடாகச் சென்று உடுக்கை அடித்துக் 'நல்ல காலம் வருகுது' என்று குறி சொல்லும் நாட்டுப்புறக் கலைஞர். அவர் தேவியின் பெயரால் குறி சொல்வார். பாரதி அந்தக் குரலை எடுத்துக்கொண்டு ஒரு புதிய இந்தியாவின் நல்ல குறியைச் சொல்கிறார். 'வேதபுரம்' என்பது பாரதி வாழ்ந்த புதுச்சேரிக்கு அவர் வைத்த பெயர்.

Explanation
The konangi, or kudukuduppaikaran, is a folk performer who goes from house to house at night, shaking a small hand-drum and foretelling 'good times are coming'. He speaks his omens in the name of the Devi. Bharathiyar takes up that voice to foretell good times for a new India. 'Vedapuram' is his name for Puducherry, where he lived.
The deities the soothsayer calls on are Mahakali and the Bhagavati of the Malayalam land, the Devi worshipped in the Bhagavati temples of Kerala. Antari, Viri, Chandika and Suli are names of Durga. In the Devi Mahatmyam, Chandika slays the asuras and brings good to the world. Here what she destroys is poverty, laziness, caste quarrels and the old madness.
'All eight Lakshmis are rising and growing': the Ashtalakshmi are the eight forms of Lakshmi, among them wealth, grain, courage, victory, learning and children. Bharathiyar's good times are not wealth alone: 'the shastras grow and caste shrinks; eyes open and justice is seen.' At the end, 'dharma is growing': all growth ends in dharma.
