Meaning

Who am I? What is my heart? What is my knowledge? Who would know me at all? If the Lord of the gods had not taken me, I would have stayed lost in confusion. He is the Lord of the Hall who takes alms in a broken skull with flesh still on it. Go to his honey-filled lotus feet and hum there, O king bee!

Explanation

'Who am I? What is my heart?' is one of the deepest questions in the Thiruvasagam, the same question the Upanishads ask. But Manikkavasagar's answer is not reached by argument: 'If the Lord had not taken me, I would be nothing.' Even knowledge of oneself comes by his grace.

In Saiva Siddhanta the soul does not know on its own; it knows as the Lord makes it know, as the eye sees only with the sun's light. 'Taking alms in a skull' is the form of Bhikshatana, the beggar carrying Brahma's skull. The owner of everything comes as a beggar to receive the love of his devotees.

Periya Puranam (Sekkizhar), the life of Kannappa Nayanar; temple tradition of Thirukkalahasti

Kannappar, Who Gave His Eyes

Thinnan was born the son of a hunter chief in the hill country of Pothappi. One day, chasing a wild boar, he came to the hill of Kalahasti. When he saw a linga on the hilltop, his heart melted. 'My Father is here all alone. Who will bring him food?' he worried.

He knew nothing of the rules of worship. He filled his mouth with river water and poured it over the linga; he decked it with the flowers he had worn in his own hair; he offered meat he had roasted with care and tasted himself to be sure it was good. All night he stood guard with his bow. In the morning the priest Sivagochariyar, who performed the daily worship, was distressed to see all this. The Lord came to him in a dream and said, 'Hide tomorrow and watch.'

The next day, when Thinnan came, blood was flowing from one eye of the linga. Frantic, he put on healing herbs, but the blood did not stop. Thinking 'flesh heals flesh', he gouged out his own eye with his arrow and pressed it on; the bleeding stopped, and he danced for joy. Then the other eye began to bleed. To mark the spot, he planted his sandalled foot on it and raised his arrow to his second eye. At that moment the Lord's hand came out and caught his hand, and a voice said three times, 'Stop, Kannappa!' His sight was restored and he was named Kannappar, 'the one who gave his eye'. The Lord granted that he would stand forever at his right side; he is remembered as the saint who reached release in six days. When Manikkavasagar sings that the Lord took him even after seeing he had no love like Kannappan's, it is by this love that he measures himself.

To reflect on

When did you last honestly ask, 'Who am I?'
