Periya Puranam (Sekkizhar), the life of Thirugnanasambandar; Thevaram, the Nallur Perumanam hymnSambandar, Who Merged into the Light at His Wedding
Thirugnanasambandar began singing at the age of three after drinking the milk of wisdom from the Goddess, and he travelled from shrine to shrine across the Tamil land singing his Thevaram hymns. When he turned sixteen, the elders wished him to marry. He was unwilling, but he agreed to their request.
The wedding took place at Nallur Perumanam. As the couple walked around the temple in worship, Sambandar felt, 'this household life will bind me; the Lord's feet alone are enough for me.' He sang the Namasivaya hymn that begins 'kadhalagik kasindhu', melting with love. Then the Lord appeared as a vast blaze of light, and a doorway opened within it. 'Enter this light, all of you,' Sambandar called. The bride, the families and all the devotees who had come to the wedding entered the light, and at last Sambandar himself entered and merged with the Lord.
In Punarchippathu, Manikkavasagar longs, 'when will I be joined with my uncut jewel?' Sambandar's story is the shape of that union: a wedding canopy, the place of earthly union, became the place of union with the Lord. And he did not go alone; he took the whole company of devotees with him.
