Periya Puranam (Sekkizhar), the life of Thirugnana Sambandar; Thevaram, the Thiruneetru Pathigam of Thiru Alavai ('The ash is the mantra')The Sacred Ash and the Pandya King's Fever
It was a time when Saivism had weakened in the Pandya land. King Nindraseer Nedumaran followed another faith. Only his queen Mangaiyarkkarasi and his minister Kulachirai were devotees of Siva in secret. At their invitation the young Sambandar came to Madurai.
One night some people set fire to the monastery where he was staying. Sambandar was not afraid. He sang a hymn asking that the fire go and seize the king, but only as a mild fever. The king fell into a terrible fever that no medicine could cure.
The queen called Sambandar to the palace. The boy sang the Thiruneetru Pathigam, 'The ash is the mantra, the ash is above the gods,' and smeared the sacred ash of the Lord of Alavai on the king. The fever left him. Tradition says his hunched back straightened too, and from then on he was called Nindraseer Nedumaran, 'Nedumaran of upright glory'. He turned to Saivism, and he, the queen and the minister were later honoured as Nayanmars.
In Achcha Pathu Manikkavasagar says he does not fear fire or kings, but he fears those who are afraid to wear the ash. Neither the king's anger nor the fire at the monastery frightened Sambandar, and a pinch of ash transformed a king.
