Periya Puranam (Sekkizhar), the life of Sakkiya Nayanar; Thiruthondaththogai (Sundarar)Sakkiya Nayanar, Who Worshipped with a Stone
A man born at Thiruchangamangai searched for truth by studying many faiths. Even while he lived as a Buddhist monk, a Sakkiya, his heart came to know that Siva is the true Reality. But he decided to worship Siva without giving up his monk's robe, just as he was.
One day he saw a Siva linga in an open field. In a joy he did not know how to express, he picked up a small stone lying nearby and threw it on the linga, and he felt that this was his worship. From that day on, he ate only after throwing a stone on the linga. To others it looked like an insult; to the Lord it was a flower of love.
One day he forgot and sat down to eat. Suddenly remembering, he left his food, ran to the linga and threw his stone. At that very moment the Lord appeared with Uma on the bull and took him to Sivaloka. Sundarar sang, 'I am the servant of Sakkiyar, who threw the stone.'
Sakkiyar reached the Lord not by learning, not by proper ritual, not by penance, but by pure love. In the Thiruvesaravu Manikkavasagar says, 'I never learned the knowledge of the arts' and 'Was it I who did penance?' Grace does not come because of merit; it comes because of love.
