Meaning

Lying in this foul birth like a dog with a worm-eaten head, I served only the women I desired and wandered about in their company. The Father showed me his fragrant flower-like anklets, which Vishnu and Brahma in this world could not reach, and ruled even me with grace. I cannot comprehend that marvel!

Explanation

Manikkavasagar uses harsh words about himself without hesitation: 'a dog with a worm-eaten head'. It is not self-loathing; he admits his lowliness fully to show how high the Lord's grace reaches.

The feet that Vishnu and Brahma searched for and could not find came and stood before a worm-ridden dog. The 'even' in 'ruled even me' carries the wonder: 'even me!'

Periya Puranam (Sekkizhar), the life of Thiruneelakanta Nayanar; Thiruthondaththogai (Sundarar); Thillai tradition of the Ilamaiyakkinar tank

Thiruneelakanta Nayanar and the Miracle of Youth Restored

Thiruneelakantar, a potter of Thillai, served the devotees by making begging bowls for them. When he was young, his wife learned one day that he had gone to another woman. Hurt, she said, 'By the holy blue throat of Siva, do not touch us again.' Honouring that word 'us', he vowed from that day never to touch any woman. Though they lived in the same house, the two kept that oath into old age.

To show the world how firm that vow was, the Lord came as a Siva yogi and gave him a begging bowl for safekeeping. Later he made it vanish, then came back and asked for it. The bowl could not be found. 'Then hold your wife's hand, dip in the tank and swear you did not take it,' said the yogi. To keep their oath, the two held the two ends of a stick and went down into the water.

When they rose, their old age was gone and they were young again. The yogi vanished, and the Lord appeared with Uma on the bull and called them both to Sivaloka. That tank in Thillai is still called Ilamaiyakkinar Kulam, 'the tank of the one who gave back youth'.

In the Arputhap Pathu Manikkavasagar honestly confesses his desires and says that the Lord's rescuing him from them is the marvel. Thiruneelakantar too had once gone astray, but for one word he stood firm for the rest of his life. The Lord does not abandon those who stumble; to those who have turned, he gives back even their youth.
