Meaning

Each is his own kin; each is the maker of his own fate. Who are we? What is ours? What is bondage? What illusions these are! Let them all go. Together with the King's devotees of old, take his sign as your only aim, and set out on the way to the golden feet of Bhujanga, so that falsehood is removed.

Explanation

'Who are we? What is ours? What is bondage?' These three questions are the essence of Vedantic and Siddhanta inquiry. Ramana Maharshi's inquiry, 'Who am I?', is akin to it. When 'I', 'mine' and 'bondage' are all questioned, illusion dissolves.

'Take his sign as your aim' means setting aside one's own wish and following the Lord's will alone. It continues the Kuzhaitha Pathu's 'You know what is worth asking for'.

Periya Puranam (Sekkizhar), the chapter of the white elephant; Thevaram (Sundarar), the Thirunodiththanmalai hymn 'Thaanenai munpadaiththaan'

Sundarar's Journey to Kailasa on the White Elephant

Sundarar and Cheraman Perumal Nayanar were the closest of friends. Though Cheraman was king of the Chera land, he travelled from shrine to shrine with Sundarar, singing the Lord's praise. One day, while Sundarar was at Thiruvanjaikkalam in the Chera country, the Lord decided to call him to Kailasa.

The gods sent a white elephant. Sundarar climbed onto it and rose into the sky. When Cheraman heard the news, unable to bear being parted from his friend, he whispered the five syllables 'Namasivaya' into his horse's ear. The horse leapt into the sky and raced ahead of the elephant. Tradition says Cheraman's soldiers, unable to be parted from their king, gave up their lives with their own swords and, taking heroic forms, followed him.

On the way Sundarar sang his last hymn, 'Thaanenai munpadaiththaan'. Tradition says Varuna, lord of the waters, carried it across the sea back to Thiruvanjaikkalam. At the gate of Kailasa, Cheraman was at first not admitted; when Sundarar pleaded, the Lord received them both.

In the Yaththiraip Pathu Manikkavasagar calls the devotees: 'Get ready only to go along with the great caravan.' Sundarar and Cheraman reached the door of Sivapuram not alone but as friends, one after the other. The company of devotees is the safety of that journey.

To reflect on

Could you sit quietly for a few minutes today and ask, 'Who am I?'
