Meaning

Resolve to reach him; set your thoughts right and think. Drink to the full the nectar of grace of Bhujanga, who shares his body with Uma whose eyes are like spears that shine in battle, and you will sink into it with a longing that is never satisfied. Do not roll about in falsehood; act so that you go to Siva's anklets.

Explanation

'Drink to the full, with a longing never satisfied' is a lovely paradox of divine love. The more one drinks, the fuller one is, yet the longing never ends; it grows. Worldly pleasures bring boredom once tasted; divine bliss brings greater thirst once tasted.

'Set your thoughts right' is the first step. Before the journey begins, the mind must be put in order.

Periya Puranam (Sekkizhar), the chapter of the white elephant; Thevaram (Sundarar), the Thirunodiththanmalai hymn 'Thaanenai munpadaiththaan'

Sundarar's Journey to Kailasa on the White Elephant

Sundarar and Cheraman Perumal Nayanar were the closest of friends. Though Cheraman was king of the Chera land, he travelled from shrine to shrine with Sundarar, singing the Lord's praise. One day, while Sundarar was at Thiruvanjaikkalam in the Chera country, the Lord decided to call him to Kailasa.

The gods sent a white elephant. Sundarar climbed onto it and rose into the sky. When Cheraman heard the news, unable to bear being parted from his friend, he whispered the five syllables 'Namasivaya' into his horse's ear. The horse leapt into the sky and raced ahead of the elephant. Tradition says Cheraman's soldiers, unable to be parted from their king, gave up their lives with their own swords and, taking heroic forms, followed him.

On the way Sundarar sang his last hymn, 'Thaanenai munpadaiththaan'. Tradition says Varuna, lord of the waters, carried it across the sea back to Thiruvanjaikkalam. At the gate of Kailasa, Cheraman was at first not admitted; when Sundarar pleaded, the Lord received them both.

In the Yaththiraip Pathu Manikkavasagar calls the devotees: 'Get ready only to go along with the great caravan.' Sundarar and Cheraman reached the door of Sivapuram not alone but as friends, one after the other. The company of devotees is the safety of that journey.
