Meaning

To those who know, I declare it boldly: the Lord before whom even Brahma, the Vedic one who gave birth to all the worlds, and Vishnu are bewildered, the Lord who dwells at Perunthurai, today dwells in my heart, staying there and never leaving.

Explanation

'I declare it' is the voice of challenge: 'Listen, you who know!' The one whom Brahma and Vishnu searched for and could not find now lives in my heart. It is not pride; it is proclaiming the wonder of grace.

He who 'dwells at Perunthurai' also 'dwells in my heart'. The temple and the heart are the same to him.

The Spider and the Elephant of Thiruvanaikka

Under a naval tree on the banks of the Kaveri stood a Siva linga. Every day a white elephant brought water from the Kaveri in its trunk, bathed the linga, placed flowers on it and worshipped. Over that same linga a spider wove a web, to shade it from the sun and the falling leaves, and worshipped in its own way.

To the elephant the web looked like dirt, and each day it washed it away. Each night the spider wove it again. Neither knew of the other; both worshipped the same Lord with love, each in its own way. One day the spider, angered, crawled into the elephant's trunk and bit it. In agony the elephant beat its trunk on the ground, and both the elephant and the spider died.

The Lord accepted the love of both. He gave the elephant liberation, and so the shrine is called Thiruvanaikka, 'the holy elephant grove'. The spider was reborn in the Chola line as Kochengat Chola. Remembering his former life, he built more than seventy Siva temples as tall terraced shrines that no elephant could climb, and he too became one of the Nayanmars.

In the Thiruvenba Manikkavasagar says, 'You set me, lower than all, in a bliss no one has ever known.' The Lord received the great elephant and the tiny spider with the same love. 'The nature of those who have reached' lies not in the size of the body but in the depth of love.

To reflect on

Could you say that the divine dwells in your heart today?
