Pazhamaikan thaakap pasaintha vazhiyae / Kizhamaithaan yaathaanum seyka - kizhamai / Poraar avarennin poththiththam nenjsath / Tharaaas sutuvathoar thee.

Meaning

Loving what is old, people will keep the bond alive along whatever line it was kneaded in; but if that kinship becomes unbearable to them, it turns into a fire that burns in their own chest and will not go out.

Explanation

The first half describes how kinship works. Old familiarity is a support, and people drag the bond along rather than break it. That is good — up to a limit.

The second half reaches that limit. If the relationship becomes unbearable, it is not a fire that burns outside; it burns within. A bond that cannot be let go does not let you go either; it smoulders in the chest. So if an old tie is to be kept, it must stay sweet; where it cannot, the wiser course is to let it go. That is what the verse says, quietly.

To reflect on

A bond you cannot release does not burn outside; it smoulders in the chest.
