Meaning

Though people are newly born every day, in this world he alone is truly born — the son who does not despise those who beg, in the land whose falls pour gold over the whole hillside.

Explanation

The first claim sounds extreme: of all born each day in the world, one alone is born. The reason follows in the next line — the one who does not despise beggars.

Birth here means not the birth of a body but being born as a human being. Only the man who does not look down on those who ask reaches that; for he does not count his plenty as a merit of his own. Just as the hill stream brings gold down its slope, plenty arrives through more than one man's skill, and the man who knows this is the one truly born. What the verse praises is not poverty but compassion.

To reflect on

To be born human is not the birth of a body; it is refusing to despise those who ask.
