Meaning

When want presses hard, people do take the small road of begging; it is not that they never go. But to stand before the face of those who say 'come in, eat' without any love in it — can the noble bear that?

Explanation

The first half accepts a fact. When want comes, begging cannot always be avoided; that is no fault. The verse does not blame the poor.

The second half puts the fault somewhere else. The words 'come in, eat' are there, but there is no love in them. It is standing before the face of those words that cannot be borne. So what matters is not the giver's hand but his heart. A gift without affection does feed a man; but it makes both the giver and the receiver smaller at once.

To reflect on

A loveless gift feeds the body and shrinks both the giver and the receiver.
