Meaning

Though wealth should leave them and the gods turn against them, unless it be with a firm heart and a mind set on what is high, the noble will not go behind the senseless hoarders and stand there with bowed neck.

Explanation

The two losses are hard: fortune going, the gods turning against you. Neither is in a man's hands. And still the verse insists on a posture — a firm mind and an eye on what is high.

With that posture kept, the neck does not bend behind another man. 'What is high' here is not rank; it is the direction of the mind. So the verse says: losing wealth is not defeat; losing your uprightness for the sake of wealth is. The 'unwise who store up food' are the rich — those who take storing to be wisdom itself.

To reflect on

Losing wealth is no defeat; losing your uprightness for wealth is.
