Meaning

When want torments him from outside, a man sets aside his inner good sense, stands before another and says, 'Give to me.' If that man refuses, will he not die right there?

Explanation

The scene is a battle inside a man. Poverty presses from outside; within, good sense tells him not to beg. He sets that sense aside and holds out his hand before another.

And if the other says no? Will he not die on the spot? To a man of self-respect, refusal is harsher than death. That is why this chapter says one should dread begging.

To reflect on

Before you ask, ask yourself whether your heart can bear a refusal.
