Meaning

In the sugar-cane plantation - ah! In the sugar-cane plantation they suffer until their legs and hands give way and fall! The hearts of Hindu women boil and boil and their bodies shrink; is there no way to remove their sorrow? Is there no medicine for this? They toil and moan like bullocks at the oil-press, there in the sugar-cane plantation. If you say they are women, they say even a demon would pity them; O God, does your thought not pity them? Will the tears those poor ones pour there be mixed with mere earth? In the middle of the southern ocean, there on an eyeless island, in a lonely jungle, women are scorching there in that sugar-cane plantation. Will they think of their country? Will they think of their mother's house, wondering on what day they may go and see it again? Wind, you must have heard their voice as they sob and sob and sob and weep! In the pit of sorrow our women wept - will you bring back their words? They have gone on sobbing and have lost their strength. Their hearts churn; in the cruelty that makes chastity slip from them all those destitute women, suffering, dying, dying, dying, with no shelter anywhere - can we let their habit of dying go on beyond this very moment? Ho, heroic Kali, Chamundi, Kaliswari!

Explanation

In the manuscripts only the pallavi survives as 'In the sugar-cane plantation - ah!'; its full form is lost, and the verses are the body of the song.

It is about Tamil women abroad: on an island in the southern ocean, in a sugar-cane plantation, women working as indentured labour. 'Like bullocks at the oil-press' names the animal condition of that labour.

'The cruelty that makes chastity slip from them' is the hardest line - not only bodily toil but honour is being taken.

The last line calls Kali, Chamundi and Kaliswari, three names of the destroying goddess: when pity cannot be asked for, valour is. That shift of address is the poem's anger.

To reflect on

When pity cannot be asked for we call on valour - what state of mind does that shift reveal?
