Explanation

This is one of Bharathiyar's most famous songs, sung in raga Yadukula Kambhoji, Adi tala. In four couplets it gives the experience of seeing Krishna through the senses: sight (the crow's wing, the trees), hearing (the sounds), touch (the fire).

Krishna's colours are dark and green, as the Alvar Thondaradippodi sang, 'a body like a great green mountain'. The crow is a common, despised bird; to see Krishna even there is the equal vision of bhakti.

The last line is the summit of the song. Putting a finger in fire naturally brings pain; but to one who knows all is Krishna, even pain is the joy of touching him. Behind it is the Bhagavatam story of Prahlada, who stayed cool in the fire thinking of Narayana. It is the state of the Gita's sthitaprajna, who sees joy and sorrow as equal.

To reflect on

'Put my finger into fire and I feel the joy of touching you' - have you ever touched God even in pain?
