Meaning
Mother, we want freedom, always!
The shining gods who dwell on the island ringed by a pure sea of honey, whose fragrance stirs delight, should come here as our friends, drink nectar with us and be close to us; a long joy should grow and ripen; every delight we think of should be given to us.
We should not grow weak before Vritra and the other asuras; a greatness before which heaven and earth come to bow should fill us. Learning the good Veda rightly, falsehood should end and truth should arrive; sorrow should perish, poverty should vanish, and plenty should pour over the whole world.
All the light that flows with songs sweet in melody should hold us on this earth as its own. The gods should come and proclaim our victory; our women should attain the state of the gods; the lovely divine maidens should mingle with us, and we too should leap with joy.

Explanation
This song is set in raga Nattai. 'Freedom' here is not only political freedom; it is the rising of human beings to the state of the gods.
Bharathiyar brings back the world of the Rig Veda. Vritra is the asura of the Veda who held back the waters and the light, until Indra slew him and set the waters free. There is a Vritra inside human beings too, holding back the light: ignorance. 'Learning the good Veda, falsehood should end' is a Tamil form of the prayer 'asato ma sad gamaya', lead me from the unreal to the real (Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 1.3.28).
The line 'our women should attain the state of the gods' deserves notice. In Bharathiyar's dream of freedom, women too rise to the divine. He often recalled women seers of the Vedic age such as Gargi and Maitreyi.
To reflect on
What is the 'Vritra' that holds back the light inside you? What could you do today to be free of it?
